These tools, available in <strong>HSS high-speed steel<\/strong> or <strong>solid carbide<\/strong>, are offered with a wide range of <strong>technical coatings<\/strong> to meet the requirements of every application.<\/p>\n\n<p>But <strong>which cutting tool coating<\/strong> is best suited to your needs? This guide provides concrete answers, depending on the material to be machined and the cutting conditions. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is a coating essential?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Cutting tools are subject to very high mechanical, thermal and chemical stress: friction, heating, abrasion, oxidation... A <strong>suitable surface treatment<\/strong> enables :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>increase toollife<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>improve cutting quality<\/strong> (surface finish, precision),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to <strong>work at higher speeds<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>reduce or eliminate lubrication<\/strong> in certain cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The benefits are tangible: fewer machine stoppages, less scrap, greater repeatability, improved productivity.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to choose the right coating?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The choice of coating depends on a number of combined parameters:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <strong>material to be machined<\/strong> (steel, stainless steel, aluminium, cast iron, titanium, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>type of machining<\/strong> (cutting, trimming, finishing, material flow)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cutting conditions<\/strong> (dry, lubricated, speed, temperature)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>It's not just an aesthetic or marketing criterion, but a <strong>strategic technical choice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coatings for steel machining<\/h2>\n\n<p>Steel is the most common material, but also the most varied (soft, hard, pretreated, low-alloy, etc.). For <strong>standard applications<\/strong>, <strong>TiN (titanium nitride)<\/strong> remains a classic: economical, versatile and wear-resistant. <\/p>\n\n<p>For demanding conditions (hard steels, dry cutting, high temperatures), choose <strong>TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride)<\/strong> for its resistance to oxidation. For intensive applications, <strong>AlTiSiN<\/strong> offers exceptional thermal resistance (&gt;1000\u00b0C) and superior wear resistance, even without polishing. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>HSS saw-cutters<\/strong> used on abrasive steels will gain in efficiency with an <strong>AlCrN coating<\/strong> (very hard, low thermal conductivity, excellent against thermal shock).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cast iron machining: high abrasion<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Grey or nodular cast iron<\/strong> is highly abrasive. It quickly wears away edges if the tool is not well protected. Two high-performance options:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TiAlN<\/strong>: heat resistance and chemical wear resistance,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AlCrN<\/strong>: resistance to abrasion and material sticking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>For complex or high-performance cycles, opt for <strong>AlTiSiN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stainless steel machining: heat and bonding<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Stainless steel<\/strong> is difficult to cut: it sticks, heats up quickly and wears away edges. <g id=\"gid_1\">TiAlN<\/g> is an excellent choice. For hard stainless steels or lubrication-free operations, <strong>AlTiSiN<\/strong> performs best.<strong>AlCrN<\/strong> is also recommended for intermittent cooling.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machining non-ferrous metals: avoiding bonding<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Aluminum, copper, brass or bronze<\/strong> are subject to bonding (partial melting on contact with the tool). For this purpose : <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>ta-C (amorphous carbon) coating<\/strong> is ideal: smooth, hard, non-stick, it maintains a sharp edge and prevents burrs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CrN (chromium nitride)<\/strong> is an alternative for soft metals such as copper or brass (good chemical resistance).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machining titanium and special alloys<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Titanium<\/strong> is highly abrasive, not very conductive and very adhesive. For lubricated cutting, <g id=\"gid_1\">CrN<\/g> is a good compromise.
